Advice, Change

The Sri Lankan rupee is the official currency of the country, symbolized by the code LKR and the symbol රු or Rs. Divided into 100 cents, it is available in the form of notes and coins of different denominations. Here are the banknotes in circulation: 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 rupees.

Currency Exchange Tips:

Before you fly to Sri Lanka, keep in mind that unlike dollars or yen, you won't be able to exchange your local currency in Europe. Currency exchange will only be possible upon arrival at Negombo International Airport.

  • Choose the Right Time: Monitor exchange rates before traveling to get the best possible rate. Fluctuations can influence the purchasing power of your money.
  • Reliable Exchange Offices: Choose approved exchange offices or banks to avoid counterfeiting or fraudulent transactions. Jewelry stores are often reliable and take no or very low commission.

Use of Payment Cards:

  • Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are generally accepted in large commercial establishments, hotels and upscale restaurants. However, it is advisable to have cash for small expenses and in rural areas.
  • ATMs: ATMs are common in major cities, but be sure to check international withdrawal fees with your bank. This solution remains the most practical for being able to obtain currency during your trip while avoiding having too much cash on you.

Saving Tips:

  • Haggling: Bargaining is a common practice in local markets and with taxis. Don't hesitate to negotiate prices to get good deals.
  • Avoid Hidden Fees: Find out about conversion fees and exchange rates charged by your bank or credit card provider.
  • Be Vigilant: Keep an eye on your money, passport and personal belongings, especially in busy tourist areas.
